About the Index
The best laptops of 2026 are ranked by Laptop Index's annual evaluation of notebook computers, scored across performance, battery life, value per dollar, display quality, portability, and repairability.
Who we are
Laptop Index is an evaluation desk for notebook computers. We publish one ranked list per year, scored on a single public method. The desk is editorial, not a vendor or a retailer: we accept no sponsored placements, and every machine entry links to its official product page.
How we work
Measured fields — battery hours, reviewer scores, retailer prices — enter a ranking only with their named source and observation date (PCMag, WIRED, NYT Wirecutter; checked 2026-10-14); anything unverified is marked as such rather than estimated. The current run is 2026.10 (9 machines, method version 2026.10). The list is updated between editions when a vendor ships a material change, and the annual edition is archived at a permanent URL ( /rankings/2026).
